At River Ridge East Birth Centre, our priority is to provide outstanding midwifery care, a comfortable and pleasant environment, and a positive birthing and postnatal experience for mums and partners to welcome their new baby.
Our staff take pride in offering calm, supportive and nurturing care to ensure everyone leaves here at the end of their stay feeling rested, and confident in caring for their newborn. Our highly regarded on site chef prepares healthy, nutritious and delicious meals each day, including freshly baked muffins and scones every morning, and for afternoon tea, a delicious lactation slice to support breastfeeding.
Congratulations, you’re having a baby! Now what?!
Having a baby is one of life’s most amazing experiences. Whether you are preparing to welcome your first baby, or your fourth baby, we aim to make your birthing experience the best it can be.
Firstly, you will need to choose a Lead Maternity Carer (LMC). In NZ, all pregnant women are required to nominate an LMC, who coordinates their maternity care. Most women/families chose a midwife as their LMC; midwives provide safe, women-focused services that families can trust.
Your midwife will help you throughout your pregnancy and continue to visit you and baby up to 6 weeks after birth, your midwife will also arrange and organise your stay with us for when baby is ready to arrive.
Midwives are experts in pregnancy and birth, and work in partnership with you to provide individualised care for you and baby throughout your pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatally, to ensure you and your baby are healthy and well.

We have four large birth rooms, each with an adjoining en-suite, fully equipped to ensure mother and baby safety, and designed to offer a relaxed and calming environment. Rooms feature dimmable lights to add to a peaceful ambience, and we also have a wide choice of birth equipment, such as the birthing pools for water birth or pain relief, birthing slings, birth stools, bean bags, or Swiss balls.
Following the birth, you can relax in one of the warm, comfortable postnatal rooms and get to know your baby. The postnatal rooms have individual ensuites and a soft, soothing décor. The environment is designed to provide a restful atmosphere to support and enhance the wellbeing of your newborn baby and you.
A Freeview TV, fridge and self service area for tea and coffee making are provided in each postnatal room. The rooms are sound-proof, fully air-conditioned with individual controls and equipped with double, electric beds. A support person is welcome to stay with you overnight and can either share the double bed or sleep on the single bed sized window seat.
For your postnatal stay, we will provide you with some of the necessities you and your baby will need (for example maternity pads, nappies and baby wipes). At your Antenatal Classes, you will be given a list of suggested items to pack, and your LMC midwife may also suggest things you will need to bring for labour and birth, and for your postnatal stay. We also have a suggested list of what you may like to bring with you for your stay. Find it here
